The new wave and punk genres appear to have been mostly popular during the 1990s. Regardless, there is a group out of Minneapolis known as the magnolias whom still have a number of fans. Having originally formed in 1984, the group has gone through a series of line up changes since inception, save for that of John Freeman, the only original member remaining in the line up.
With regards to the sound, the group appears to be caught somewhere between punk and metal. For, with buzz-saw guitar attacks, an intense rhythm section and John's caterwauling and awesome writing, when fans hear the group, they know its John Freeman's band. Whereas, as the members seem to change on a revolving basis, the sound can often change as well.
With influences of, and sound similar to, the Clash, Undertones, Buzzcocks and Real Kids, it is interesting that the band has not been more successful. Whereas, as punk and new wave were biggest in the 1990s, there only a few punk rockers still playing live shows or going on tour. As a result, a number of venues have stopped booking punk gigs due to a lack of interest.
The band released a single and LP once having signed with Alias Records. After which, Street Date Tuesday was released on the Twin/Tone label. While out of touch for quite some time, Alias Records had managed the original line-up early on in their career.
The band released an LP of unreleased demos and outtakes called Better Late Than Never in 2007. After which, in 2008, the group took off on their first and only European tour, returning home in 2009. As the tour was a success, the band continued to play live shows from 2009 to 2011.
The band host a fan page on Facebook, and has a number of videos on YouTube which have received mixed reviews. According to the Facebook page, it appears the last show was in July of 2017. While this is the case, as the group only plays sporadically, there could have been other shows since that time. When it comes to YouTube videos, there are a number of live shows and studio recordings, most of which are punk in genre.
At last notice line up included Dave Randall, Pat McKenna, Mike Leonard and John Freeman. Whereas, past members have included Tom Lischmann, John Joyce, Ron Anderson, Kyle Killorin, Tom Cook, Sam Planet, Kent Militzer, Caleb Palmiter, Johnny O'Halloran, Danna Stewart, Dave Wiegardt and Eric Kassel. Unlike other bands, there are no listings as to which instruments were played by which musicians.
Individuals looking for information on booking, show dates, the band or current members are advised to check out the band's page on Facebook for information on future album releases, tour dates or current line-up. For, at the moment, there is no official website associated with the group. Whereas, music fans should also check local entertainment guides, festival line-ups and tour sites such as Jambase.
