A Fish Lover's Guide to Koi Pond Construction

By Karen Cook

If you love the idea of adding a water feature to your back yard, you may want to consider a pond that holds fish. Koi pond construction can be either simple and small or elaborate and massive. It all depends on your budget, the amount of space you have to work with, and how creative you want to be. If you are seriously thinking about adding fish to your outdoor living space, here are a few things you need to know.

While there are many similarities between goldfish and koi they are not the same thing. They are both related but there are differences. Koi can be identified by the barbs that they grow. They also form attachments to their owners and will come eagerly at feeding time.

One thing that you need to consider is the climate where you live when deciding on how you will build your pond. If you live in an area where the temperature gets quite cold you will need to take this into account. You will either need to make sure that your pond is deep enough that the fish can live below the ice or you will need to find alternate living arrangements for the koi while the water is frozen. A third alternative is to purchase a bubbler that keeps the water from freezing.

There are many different ways that you can build a koi pond. Figuring out whether you want one that is set into the ground or which is built up from the surrounding landscape is important as this will help you narrow down your construction methods and materials.

Digging out a space for a pond may be hard work but it is worthwhile work. You can either use a liner that has been shaped already in order to be your digging guide or you can mark out an area using spray paint and dig away to your heart's content. Flexible liners are best if you live in colder climates as they can handle it when the ground freezes. Instead of breaking, they flex. Cement is another option but you may need to spend time allowing it to dry and cure properly.

There are many reasons why someone would want to build a raised version instead. Some areas cannot be excavated due to pipes or lines. Often, raised sides will make it easier to sit with your fish while feeding or interacting with them. You simply use stones or bricks to build up the side and use a liner to waterproof the structure.

Once you have the basic structure, you will need to add a filter system that helps keep the water clean. You need to make sure that the system you choose will promote a healthy environment for your koi. There are many options available and you will need to pick the model that will work with the size of your pond.

The final step is perhaps the most enjoyable. You can now go shopping for koi and for plants or other items to add to your yard. It is a good idea to know how large your pond is so that an expert can advise you as to how many fish you need. If you have too many you will find that they do not thrive and may even die due to stress or overcrowding.
