Tips For Hang Gliding North Carolina Instructors Offer Enthusiastic Seniors

By Michelle Gray

There are a lot of seniors who go into their retirement years with a bucket list. These are the things they want to learn, do, see, and experience. For some adventurous seniors there is nothing more exciting than the idea of soaring over the landscape armed with nothing more than a set of wings, a harness, and the power of the wind. For them the hang gliding North Carolina instructors offer is a dream come true.

You would not get in a car with a driver that was unlicensed and inexperienced. In the same way, you should not consider gliding in tandem with, or taking instruction from, just anybody. There are some schools that train their own instructors.

If finding the best qualified instructor interests you, you should ask what certifications the instructors have. The United States recognizes two certification programs. Instructors can get certified through the United States Hang Gliding Association or the Parachuting Association.

Safety must be your number one concern. Soaring over the ground might not seem especially risky. There are thousands of people doing it each year safely and without mishap, but it's still important to heed the instructions. In order to minimize the risks, instructors give lessons in controlled environments. If you have questions, this is the time to ask them. If you notice something unusual about your harness, helmet, or other equipment, you need to say something.

Taking lessons with a group has several advantages. For one thing, group lessons are less expensive than private ones. Someone in the group might bring up a subject, or ask a question, that you are hesitant to do yourself. You can learn from the mistakes and successes of the other people in the group. You'll probably have a lot more fun, and might make some new friends in a group environment.

Remember not to look down. Students have to go against all their instincts when they're racing downhill and gathering the necessary speed to take off. It is difficult not to watch the ground while you're running, but it is always the wrong choice to make. After you're in the air, it's important to focus on the horizon. When you start looking down, you will lose altitude and have to adjust your wings.

You want to relax as much as you don't want to look down. Soaring over the earth should be fun. If you tense up, your shoulders and arms will end up throwing you off. It will get a lot more difficult to fly safely. Relaxing gives you a chance to feel how the wind is flowing and work with it instead of trying to control it.

The dead of summer or winter is not the time to try this sport. You'll be a lot more comfortable if you don't feel like you're freezing or dying of thirst. On a clear day, with a brisk but manageable wind, you'll have a fun and safe ride.
