Important Information About Aircraft Turbine Oil

By Helen Snyder

Most likely you have landed on this article page right now because either you are an aircraft engineer or even aircraft owner who is very much interested in aircraft maintenance. In addition to this you are also quite the supporter of preventive maintenance when dealing with machines or anything mechanical. In terms of preventive maintenance for aircraft, a key component or ingredient that you would consider and use will be aircraft turbine oil. Thus to know more about this component for your preventive maintenance practice do read on for more information.

Engine health which in turn will translate to the overall air worthiness of aircraft, is guaranteed by routine maintenance protocols using high quality and high performance aircraft turbine oils. Currently two major oil brands exist which are well known for the production of these high performance oils, being Mobil and Aero Shell. It must be taken note of also that other brands do exist apart from these two that can just be as good or maybe even better.

Engines in airplanes are very similar to the ones found in automobiles as they do provide propulsion after combustion of fuel. The similarity between the two however ends there, as they differ quite a lot in terms of mechanical make up. Car engines achieve propulsion by the sue of piston power while aircraft engines do so by the use of turbines. These turbines achieve maximum revolution by extreme pressurized gases released by combustion of jet fuel.

The combustion of jet fuel occurs in an environment where there is high temperature, high speed and high pressure, so it will need an oil that can adapt to this extreme environment. Not only will it have to adapt to these extremes, but it must also provide good anti wear and anti corrosion benefits while maintaining good thermal and oxidation properties.

Once you do start searching for the turbine oil you need, make sure that it is fitted for the specific commercial use your plane is made for. Thus you should get an oil depending on the commercial duties of your plane whether it be personal, transport of people or even cargo. It will also be to your advantage if you can find an oil which has military grade specs, for this will mean that it is really reliable and dependable.

Should you have deep enough pockets you can also go for OEM or original equipment manufacturer turbine oils. This basically means that you use the same oil that is made by the same manufacturer of the engine. These are basically purpose specific and specialized oils made by the manufacturer of the engines themselves In simple works you will be using IL from Honda made by them if the engine you have is also a Honda for example.

In the long run it may be the most practical and best thing to buy in bulk price wise. This is particularly true if you do regular servicing across several units of aircraft and not only one. To be able to buy in bulk you must have on hand bulk storage facilities and also a supplier willing to directly deliver to you.

This this short article has shown some important aspects about turbine oil that you should know about. Try to also delve further into the many characteristics of the many different types and brands out there so you will be more informed and knowledgeable.
