Quick Meal Recipes Can Improve Health

By Dorothy Scott

These days, the average adult wants to put their hard earned money to good use. Yet, eating out more than a couple of times a week can be costly, especially when the same meal can be made at home for less. It is just that some people tend to be creatures of habit and do not realize that quick meal recipes can serve many purposes.

Though some see cooking a meal as a job, some recipes take little preparation time and labor. People who cook sometimes find they have many of the ingredients in their pantry, eliminating a trip to the supermarket. Some dishes are so fast to make that they require using one or two food containers. This is better than driving around and waiting for service before actually eating.

Cooking at home does not have to be a chore but can take less time than eating out and more nutritious. Instead of making special requests with the chef, a person who takes charge in their own kitchen and save themselves the hassle. People looking to trim down will find that homemade meals are better than skipping meals or other drastic changes.

For instance, there are a number of options that will make a pizza healthier, such as using a grain crust or bread with fewer carbohydrates like flatbread. Tomato sauce with crushed garlic or Italian seasoning is much healthier than canned pizza sauce or ketchup. As for toppings, fresh sliced vegetables or alternatives for meat and cheese can cut the fat content in half.

Any ingredients that are left over may be used to top pasta, rice or another type of grain that cooks quickly. Pizzas can also be frozen for future use and is more economical than having it delivered. Remember, it takes time to place an order and longer to cook the food with hopes that it will be made as requested.

Doing this regularly can take some discipline for the working adult. They realize that they do not have to stop and buy food already prepared but do it because it is convenient or a habit. There are also those who need to plan ahead because maybe there are dietary needs that should be handled. Learning how to cook or get organized may take time to become routine but there are long term benefits that come with the effort.

When people go out to buy things like fresh vegetables or unprocessed meat, they are often concerned about having the extra spoil if not eaten by a certain time. The best thing is to set aside time to prepare food as if a meal was being prepared but placing it the freezer. Food storage bags are available in a number of sizes and will keep foods edible for up to six months. There are also machines that will preserve food longer without freezer burn.

It also helps to keep ingredients that have a longer shelf time like grains and potatoes, as they are easy to cook alone and can be added to soup or sauce for an entree. To cut down on preparation, the produce section of most supermarkets sell vegetables, herbs and fruits that have been cleaned and cut to size. There are many meal possibilities when a person uses their imagination.
