A home or a house that has been converted to take in guests and travelers can best describe what a bed and breakfast is. As such being a former home, not all will have private bathrooms per room, and most bathroom facilities will be shared. If this is a sticky issue for you, inquire if the place you have in mind has ensuite facilities. If it does not, then move on to the next one.

When compared to motels and bigger hotels, bed and breakfasts can be more accommodating if you bring pets along. But remember that this is not always the case and it is always prudent to inquire beforehand to avoid any embarrassment or misunderstandings that may occur.

Families and children, contrary to what many people believe are not always welcomed at some bed and breakfasts. Some have a no family rule preferring single adults or adults only, while some allow children of a certain age or over or not at all. If you do your travels with your family, it is always wise to inquire first before booking, to avoid any hassle or complications later on.

As regards meals, the pricing for these will vary from one place to another. Some rates that are charged you for the full stay will include meals while others will not and be priced as extra items. Inquire on inclusions and exclusions prior to your stay to avoid conflicts that may occur later on when paying.

It would also be a good idea to ask what kind of extra amenities you may receive with your stay. Most will have some kind of basic wifi and cable television connection to make your stay a bit more enjoyable. Some do offer room service at limited times. Inquire also about any unique house rules that you may need to follow, such as curfews, as most of the time the place you are staying in is a home to someone else.

These items thus covered are essential items that should be in your checklist, although they are by no means all inclusive and exhaustive. There will be other factors on top of these items that you need to consider also as go along with your search. Always remember to leave no stone uncovered so as for you to arrive at a rock solid and informed decision.
